1 and 2 Kings

The First and Second books of Kings provide a seamless continuation of the story of the Israelite nation from 2 Samuel. The books of Kings cover a period of nearly four centuries and describe the history of the Monarchy in Israel from the death of David to its ultimate destruction in 586 BC. The story begins with the reign of Solomon and the subsequent division of the kingdom into the ten tribe kingdom of Israel in the north and the two tribe kingdom of Judah in the south. There are many ups and downs in the period, the political health of the kingdoms usually mirroring the spiritual wellbeing of king and people. The approach of the book is to comment on the good and bad deeds of both righteous and evil kings in the two kingdoms as well as providing information on the work of the prophets Elijah and Elisha.
