The book of Genesis covers the period of the first 2000 or so years of human history. It is a book of foundations, for it deals with questions like where our world came from, why we are here, what human beings are like, what God is like, and what He expects. Each of these is absolutely central to everything else that unfolds in the rest of the Bible. So much so that the book has been called the 'seed-bed' of the Bible - everything else about God and His plan grows out of Genesis. It truly is a great place to start.
